BOCA RATON – September 3, 2010 - Second-Half Turn-Around Gives FSC 2-1 Win Over Georgia College. Princess Haley scores the first goal of the season for the Moccasins.Princess Haley scores the first goal of the season for the Moccasins. The first half of Florida Southern first game of 2010 didn’t go according to plan, but the final result was exactly what the Moccasins were seeking. With second-half goals by Princess Haley and Adi Alvarado, and an almost perfect half of defense, Florida Southern was able to a rally for a 2-1 win over Georgia College in the season opener for both teams. Out-shot 10-5 in the first half, and trailing 1-0 after a late counter-attack goal by the Bobcats, the Moccasins re-grouped and looked like a different team in the second half. They had seven shots in the first 20 minutes after halftime, and every one of them posed a serious threat. Two of them found their mark, and Haley was involved in both of them. With one goal and one assist in the match, Haley became Florida Southern’s career scoring leader with 80 points, moving ahead of former teammate Linda Hoglund. Haley’s goal came at the 54:51 mark, following a corner kick from Kara Moore. In between, Anna Ott and Alex Hoover each played the ball before it ended up with Haley in front of the near post. The senior forward finished the play with a close-range shot that tied the score at one. Five minutes later, Haley came out of the right corner and found Alvarado in front of the net for the Mocs’ second goal, and the 2-1 lead held up the rest of the match. “When you play a team like Georgia College, you have to give them a lot of respect,” said FSC head coach Ben Strawbridge. “We knew we were facing an excellent defense and an All-American goalkeeper, so we had to be patient. I was proud of the way we did that and took advantage of the opportunities we had.” Although Florida Southern didn’t score again, the Moccasins were in such control that Georgia College managed only two shots in the second half, both of them coming in the final eight minutes. Martina Tangen Billing was up to the task each time, stopping a deflected shot by Haley O’Hayer that was headed toward the right post, and later making a kick save against O’Hayer when the Bobcat forward got open at the top of the box. She finished with six saves in the game. Tangen Billing was playing without All-SSC defender Ashlie Haas for the first time in her career, but the Mocs got a big lift from Moore in the second half to help shut down the Bobcats. The freshman midfielder dropped back to play in the center of the Florida Southern defense next to Morgan Sammons, while regular starters Lexie Bottomley and Kristen Vollmer did their usual work on the outside. “Kara really stepped up for us in the second half,” said Strawbridge, “but the difference was not so much the lineup, but the intensity. We had to battle through some tough circumstances today, and it wasn’t always pretty, but we stayed patient and did a great job of finding a way to get a positive result.” Even the first-half numbers were a bit deceptive. Of the 10 shots Georgia College had, only one came from inside 20 yards, and that shot resulted in the Bobcats’ only goal. It came with just under three minutes to play after Georgia College turned aside a Florida Southern corner kick and quickly pushed the ball up-field on a counter-attack. O’Hayer did most of the work, dribbling through the defense before finding Katie Taylor with a pass in the middle of the field. She took it the final 30 yards or so, beating Tangen Billing 1-on-1 for the goal. Tangen Billing had to make another save just before halftime to keep it a 1-0 game, but the second half belonged to Florida Southern. Right from the outset, the Mocs threatened when Ott had a shot stopped at close range in the 52nd minute, and Haley had a shot saved and bounce off the post in the 53rd. Emily Griffith later had one saved by a defender when Georgia College goalkeeper Mary Rob Plunkett was drawn out of the net. The Moccasins had a total of 15 shots in the game, as well as 11 corner kicks. The Bobcats had 12 shots and no corners. Florida Southern will play its second game of 2010 on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 against 19th-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State (GA).
