Lynn University Mens Tennis vs Florida Southern, Lynn Capturing Second-Straight Southeast Regional NCAA Championship, May 6, 2006 1pm
Boca Raton, Fla.The #5 Lynn University mens tennis team pushed past #15 Florida Southern College this afternoon by the score of 5-2 in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Final to capture its second-straight championship. In the rematch of last years regional final, the Fighting Knights (18-5) duplicated the outcome over the Moccasins (14-12) as they will make their third trip to the NCAA Division II National Championships in program history. Lynn will travel to Kansas City, Mo. and compete for the national title on May 10-13 at The Plaza Tennis Center. This team has come a long way this season and I couldnt be prouder of seeing their hard work and dedication pay off, head coach Mike Perez said. Weve been through a lot together and confidence will take you a long way. Were exciting about the upcoming week and ready to face the challenges of the national tournament in Kansas City. The Knights applied the pressure early on the Mocs as they swept all three doubles matches to take the quick lead. Freshman Lorenzo Cava and senior Jan Macko dominated Michael Knoedler and Alex Thesleff at the top position with an 8-1 victory. The sensational duo of freshman Julien Carsuzaa and junior Dennis Riegraf put together an 8-4 win at the second spot over Milos Koprivica and Isaac Galindo as they move to 19-2 on the season, the second most doubles victory in program history. Finishing off the doubles for Lynn, senior Regnier Azevedo and freshman Raphael Koehle took down Adam Flintoff and Gregg Heartt 8-5 at the third spot. Needing just two points for the championship, Riegraf and Carsuzaa again came through for the Knights with two huge singles victories. At the third position, Riegraf improved to 18-2 this season with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Flintoff. With the winning point, Carsuzaa closed out the match with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Knoedler as he remains unbeaten this season with a perfect 17-0 record. We all did such a great job of coming out with a lot of energy today and jumped on them early, Riegraf said. I know we still have a lot to prove at the national tournament but well take this momentum to Kansas City and focus on playing our best.
