Lynn University Soccer vs Palm Beach Atlantic October 7, 2006 1pm Boca Raton, Florida
BOCA RATON, Fla. - Lynn University's men's soccer team won one for the skipper on Saturday, defeating Palm Beach Atlantic 5-2 to give head coach Shaun Pendleton his 300th career victory. The Fighting Knights showed no ill effects from their loss earlier in the week as Dwight Barnett and William Young each netted two goals. Lynn improves to 10-1 on the season, marking the 21st consecutive year with double-digit victories. "I'm excited to reach it and get it out of the way," said Pendleton who is 300-35-11 (.883) in his career and holds the top winning percentage in NCAA Division II history. "It's a great accomplishment and something I'm very proud of. To get it at home was even more special. But the bigger picture is that we won an important game and at 10-1 we are closer to getting to our ultimate goal, a national title." Lynn opened the scoring just 2:32 into the game. Barnett and Kenneth Viquez used a nice give and go combination to free up space on the back line. Barnett then chipped a cross over the keeper where Young put home the first goal of the match. Less than four minutes later Viquez set up another goal. The senior midfielder drove a low cross from the right side across the six-yard box. Barnett one-timed the shot past the keeper for his team leading sixth goal. Viquez finally found back of the net in the 20th minute. Barnett heeled a pass inside the penalty box where Viquez juked the keeper and sent in a low shot on the open net to give Lynn a 3-0 lead. Barnett capped the first half scoring in the 30th minute when he collected a long through ball by Jean Alexandre and beat the keeper to the near post. The Fighting Knights, though, made some personnel changes at the start of the second half which didn't quite pan out. The defense lost the shutout in the 51st minute off an own goal. Then in the 58th minute Lynn couldn't clear the ball out of traffic and Cheyne Roberts scored from the top of the box, cutting the lead to 4-2. Young though squashed any thoughts of a comeback in the 67th minute. Leon Jackson headed a ball inside the six-yard box and Young out-muscled the Sailfish defense and tapped in the ball for his third goal of the year. LU's defense held PBA (5-8-2) to only one shot in the first half and four for the game.
